GI Bill® for Veterans - Latest News

Young Veterans Applying for Scholarships

What has changed?

On April 16, 2024 the Supreme Court of the United States decided that if you served at least two periods of service-one that qualifies for the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) and another that qualifies for the Post-9/11 GI Bill (PGIB)-you may be able to receive additional GI Bill benefits.

Who qualifies?

Beneficiaries who paid into and qualified for the Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (Chapter 30) and met the requirements for the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) through separate periods of service, may use benefits under both programs for a total combined period of 48 months.

G.I. Bill® Update Notes

1. Additional 12 Months of Tuition & Housing Allowance

Veterans who have already used up their GI Bill benefits may now qualify for an extra 12 months of funding. This provides more opportunities for further education, career growth, and retraining.

2. Extended GI Bill Coverage

Veterans who contributed to the Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30) and later qualified for the post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) through separate periods of service can now use both programs for a total of up to 48 months of benefits.

3. Updated Housing Allowance

With the new updates, the housing allowance (BAH: Basic Allowance for Housing) is estimated at around $3,882 per month, helping veterans focus on their studies without financial strain.

4. Support for Careers in High-Demand Fields

GI Bill benefits can now be used for training in growing industries such as IT and holistic health. This allows veterans to pursue new career paths without the burden of tuition costs.

5. Expanded Eligibility Criteria

Even if you have previously used all your GI Bill benefits, you may still qualify for additional support under these new regulations. Veterans eligible for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill can receive long-term educational assistance.

These updates make the GI Bill more accessible and beneficial, empowering more veterans to continue their education and build successful careers.
