The Department of Defense (DoD) is dedicated to cultivating a robust STEM workforce to address the nation’s security challenges. Through the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, the DoD invests in the education of future scientists, engineers, and researchers.
The SMART Scholarship offers comprehensive financial support to students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, including cybersecurity. Benefits include full tuition coverage, annual stipends ranging from $30,000 to $46,000 depending on degree level, summer internships, health insurance allowances, and book allowances. Recipients are also paired with experienced mentors and are guaranteed civilian employment with the DoD upon graduation. In return, scholars commit to working with the DoD for a period equivalent to the duration of their scholarship support.
The application period for the SMART Scholarship opens annually on August 1 and closes on December 1. Eligible applicants must be citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom; 18 years of age or older; and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the 21 STEM disciplines critical to national security.
