Currently, the state of California does not require licenses for the massage profession. Certification remains voluntary, and can be completed online through the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC).
However, certification may be necessary for businesses to practice within certain areas of the state. For instance, local massage regulations mandate all massage therapists practicing within Los Angeles and San Mateo County become certified by the corporation.
The CAMTC requires that all applicants are at least 18 years old and complete at least 500 hours of appropriate schooling (including 100 hours devoted to anatomy and physiology, contraindications, health and hygiene, and business and ethics). A student who completes their PMT certification at ICOHS College will have 630 clock hours of training.
Applicants must also complete a background check and pay the $200 fee (reimbursed by ICOHS College). Certifications are valid for two years.
